Councillor Dimas Toby: A Commitment to Community and Cultural Leadership

Currently serving his third term, Councillor Dimas Toby is dedicated to advancing the aspirations and needs of his community while fostering cultural and spiritual practices. He is passionate about creating opportunities for future leaders and ensuring a sustainable path forward for the Torres Strait region.

A proud member of the Guda Malulgal (Boigu, Dauan, Saibai), Cr. Toby’s extensive experience includes serving as a Teacher’s Aide at Malu Kiai Campus, Sports and Recreation Officer, SES Coordinator Volunteer, and currently, as the Ranger Supervisor with the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA).

Cr. Toby is committed to:

  • Strengthening cultural and spiritual traditions
  • Empowering local communities to make informed decisions
  • Facilitating investment and development in the region to benefit all

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Cr. Toby enjoys:

  • Fishing and hunting
  • Island dancing
  • Participating in cultural ceremonies
  • Exploring the history and traditions of various cultures

Cr. Toby’s goal is to bring investment and development to the Torres Strait, creating opportunities for self-determination within the community and region. He draws strength from both his leadership role and his cultural heritage, understanding the unique challenges faced by the Torres Strait and Indigenous peoples of Australia.
