Service Overview

The Building Services Unit (BSU) at TSIRC is responsible for the repairs and maintenance of social housing and council-owned assets, as well as overseeing new construction projects on behalf of both the State and Federal Governments.

We collaborate closely with contractors, key stakeholders, and government agencies to advocate for and oversee the construction and refurbishment of building assets, helping to enhance the infrastructure across our region.

Useful Information

Our BSU responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with government agencies to secure funding for housing upgrades and the development of new housing in the region.
  • Ensuring existing social housing is safe, liveable, and well-maintained.
  • Maintaining council-owned assets to ensure they remain functional, accessible, and in good condition.

Key Initiatives

Advocating for improved housing

In our latest Advocacy Action Plan, Regional Social Housing is identified as priority area 3. We acknowledge that each community deserves to have adequate housing and that access to safe and affordable housing is critical in Closing the Gap, enabling strong, resilient and liveable communities.

Social Housing Strategy

We are currently developing a 10-year Social Housing Strategy focused on providing high-quality, sustainable housing solutions that honour and preserve cultural heritage. This strategy will assess the housing needs of our communities, considering factors such as native title, land availability, overcrowding, family structure, and appropriate housing design. We recognise that effective community consultation is essential to ensure the success of the delivery model and the construction of housing that truly meets the needs of our people.

Modular housing

Some of our remote communities have helped co-design a range of new factory-built homes. The one to four-bedroom designs and plug-in modules were developed by the Office of the Queensland Government Architect and QBuild in consultation with the Torres Strait Island Regional Council to ensure they are not only comfortable but also meet local cultural and environmental needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I request home repairs?

There are 3 ways to request home repairs – utilising a blue phone in your community, calling the maintenance number directly or submitting a request online.

Blue phone:

Blue phones are installed in all communities. They are typically located in or near the Council office. You can use the phone to call the Maintenance Call Centre and report anything that needs fixing in your home. There is no phone number to dial, the phone will automatically call the Maintenance Call Centre upon picking up the receiver. This phone is free to use and is only available for maintenance requests.

Calling direct:

Ph: 1300 738 616 (during business hours)

Ph: 1800 808 107 (emergency maintenance after hours)

Online:

You can submit a request online via the Tenant Assist Qld App

For all further information please visit the requesting maintenance page on the Queensland Government website

How long do I have to wait for home repairs?

The timeframe for repairs is dependent on need and urgency. We attend first to repairs that are critical to health and safety of occupants. We do our best to attend to all repairs as soon as possible and thank you for your patience. Once the job is logged, you can follow up with your local Housing Officer who will have the job and status.
