Key Initiatives

Marine Debris Taskforce

We’re taking steps to reduce marine debris such as ghost nets and plastic rubbish that can impact our way of life, the beauty of our homes and our vulnerable marine life. With the support of Parks Australia, we announced a partnership with the Salty Monkeys to develop the Marine Debris Task Force project. Together, we're taking proactive steps to address the pressing issue of marine debris across the Torres Strait.

Watch the video below and stay tuned for updates as we work hand in hand to make a positive impact on our environment and society.

Safe and Healthy Housing Program

The Safe and Healthy Housing Program is a Queensland Government Department of Housing, Queensland Health and QBuild initiative, designed to enhance the health and quality of life for families in the Torres Strait by improving the functionality and safety of their homes. The initiative has resulted in a series of short videos showcasing how a well-maintained home and healthy living practices can benefit both families and the community.

Free online food safety training

Food hygiene within our region is an important issue. All food businesses and food sellers have obligations, and the Torres Strait Island Regional Council is assisting food businesses to meet these obligations by providing free access to this training tool.

Training is available here.
