About The Art Centres

Art exhibition at Cairns Courthouse Gallery

The art centres on Badu, Moa, and Erub play a vital role in preserving and promoting Torres Strait Islander culture. They foster a supportive environment that safeguards endangered cultural traditions while also encouraging innovation and creativity.

Ngalmun Lagau Minaral Arts | Moa Arts

Ngalmun Lagau Minaral Arts (NLM), or Moa Arts supports a strong tradition of artistic endeavour and cultural practices on Moa Island in the Torres Strait. Artistic inspiration is drawn from ancestral stories, totemic representation and connections to sea, land, sky and family. The island, and its surrounding waters and reefs, provide a highly diverse set of land and marine ecosystems that support the existence of unique species, such as dugong and sea turtles. They partner with our artists and strengthen culture through our festivals and events.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does purchasing art produced in one of the art centres benefit our communities?

Purchasing an artwork helps to directly support both artist and art centre economically and culturally. Purchasing an artist’s work helps to sustain our art centres that are able, when well-resourced, to provide important marketing and funding opportunities for artists. Buying a unique artwork also enables the promotion of our artists and culture to a wider audience.

Do the local art centres provide other social benefits?

Yes. They provide training and local employment and also act as archives and ‘keeping places’ for significant cultural objects.
