Councillor Francis Pearson: Committed to Empowering the Community and Advancing the Region

Councillor Francis Pearson’s primary goal for the region is to empower the existing workforce by helping employees advance in their careers, achieve higher positions, and take on leadership roles that bring pride to the nation. He is passionate about creating opportunities for professional growth and development.

Cr. Pearson began his career as a teacher in Far North Queensland after completing his Diploma of Teaching at James Cook University. He worked in Cairns, Weipa, and Yarrabah before the opportunity arose to return home to teach in the Torres Strait. His leadership journey continued as he was elected Chairperson of Coconut Island Council, serving on the ICC and the TSRA. After four years in this role, Cr. Pearson transitioned to the position of Functional Manager at Coconut Island Resort, followed by roles as a Divisional Engineering Officer and in airport and seaport coordination.

Cr. Pearson’s specific goal for Poruma is to see the construction of a seawall to halt the ongoing erosion. As a Councillor, he is committed to ensuring employment opportunities for the community.

A confident and passionate leader, Cr. Pearson draws strength from his faith and serves as the MC for the New Day concert. He credits his own success to the encouragement he received to pursue a career in teaching and the value of his work in Far North Queensland.

Cr. Pearson’s message to his community is clear: “Never stop trying to develop yourself. Don’t hide behind shame—seek out information and opportunities that can help you become someone great in the future. Develop through your faith.”
