Councillor Ranetta Wosomo: Driving Leadership and Opportunity for Division 5 Badu Island

As the Deputy Mayor of the Torres Strait Island Regional Council and Councillor for Division 5 (Badu Island), Councillor Ranetta Wosomo is passionate about fostering self-determination, economic opportunity and cultural preservation across the region.

A proud member of the Dhamway Tribe and Karbai Thabu Clan, married to the Umai Clan, Councillor Wosomo has built a career spanning over 20 years, starting as a receptionist at Dauan Island Council. She has since held diverse roles, including payroll officer, administration officer, and Divisional Manager. Her journey also includes achieving tertiary qualifications, such as a Diploma in Business and Diploma in Management, which have equipped her to navigate council operations effectively and forge strong relationships across the region.

Councillor Wosomo’s entrepreneurial spirit shines through her ownership of Mepla Style, a 100% Indigenous business based on Badu Island that has been operating since 2018. She is also a driving force behind the establishment of a tourism-focused organisation on Badu Island to support local business growth and create new opportunities.

A firm advocate for self-determination, Councillor Wosomo’s priorities align with the Masig Statement, emphasizing access to safe, secure, and affordable housing, transport and freight. Her vision includes equitable access to mainland services, enhanced regional safety through Blue Security initiatives, and the creation of culturally safe spaces for her constituents.

Councillor Wosomo is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of leaders, particularly young women and girls across the Torres Strait, encouraging them to pursue leadership roles in any profession.

In her personal time, Councillor Wosomo embraces island life, enjoying fishing, beach outings, and participating in traditional activities like island dancing. She is a regular churchgoer and an active participant in cultural and community events.
