Councillor Rocky Stephen: Driven by Culture and Focused on Regional Progress
Culture is a powerful source of strength for Councillor Rocky Stephen, motivating him “to achieve outcomes, appreciate the things we take for granted, and never give up on our goals.”
Cr. Stephen is dedicated to improving infrastructure in Ugar, including establishing a locally-run helicopter service and enhancing barge operations and wharf access.
With 18 years of experience as a Biosecurity Officer with the Department of Agriculture, Cr. Stephen now serves as Director of Kos and Abob Fisheries (TSIC), Manager of Brother Bear Ferry Service, and Manager of the Purple Spider Dance Team. He holds qualifications in local government, financial accountability, and Indigenous leadership, and is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration at James Cook University.
Cr. Stephen enjoys fishing, diving, sports, traditional dance and singing, studying, and building business. His biggest goal while in Council is to secure more infrastructure funding and advance the ‘One Boat Governance Reform’.
He credits his parents’ teachings about right and wrong for shaping who he is today, believing discipline is essential to becoming a leader for his people. Cr. Stephen’s message to his community is clear:
“I don’t make promises, but I will always do my best to address issues and support the Mayor in achieving the region’s aspirations, working together with my fellow Councillors.”
