Torres Strait Flag Day

Torres Strait flag day 30th Anniversary
Torres Strait flag day 30th Anniversary

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the official recognition of the Torres Strait Islander Flag.

First designed in 1992 by the late Bernard Namok of Thursday Island, the flag was formally acknowledged as a “Flag of Australia” by the Australian Government in 1995.

The flag symbolizes the unity and identity of Torres Strait Islander people. Its green, black and blue colors represent the land, the people and the sea. The white Dhari and five-pointed star symbolize culture, peace, the five major island groups, and the importance of stars in navigation for the seafaring people of the Torres Strait.

This day is an important occasion for us to express our pride in our culture, our heritage and our deep, ongoing connection to our country.
