BSU Team Steps Up with New Training and Leadership Skills

The Torres Strait Island Regional Council’s (TSIRC) Building Services Unit (BSU) is taking important steps to build staff capability and improve workplace safety through training and on-the-ground initiatives.
Recently, BSU officers travelled to Cairns to complete four high-risk training courses at the Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE. The training focused on machinery operation, working safely at heights, asbestos handling and silica awareness. These skills are essential for managing risks on worksites, ensuring the safety of workers and community members and meeting important regulatory requirements.
BSU staff also took part in leadership training delivered by Peak Services in Cairns. This program supports the development of strong leaders within the team and reflects TSIRC’s commitment to building staff capability for both current responsibilities and future opportunities.
Closer to home, BSU has also been focused on improving worksites across the region. The team has been cleaning out building sheds and removing legacy waste on divisions, with recent efforts centred on Masig, Yam, Warraber and Saibai. These clean-ups not only create safer and more efficient work environments but also support sustainable service delivery across island communities.
By combining training, leadership development and workplace improvements, TSIRC’s Building Services Unit is strengthening safety and service standards while ensuring its workforce is well-prepared for the future.
