Trustee Policy tabled at July Council meeting

A full session of the Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC) has tabled its new Trustee Policy.

The policy guides Council’s leasing decisions across the 13 divisions held by TSIRC as Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT) land.

The updated policy includes a specific decision-making process tailored to each community.

Council will follow these procedures to assess applications and grant leases for home ownership and commercial opportunities.

Ailan Kastom and Aboriginal tradition embedded in the policy will allow Council to make merit-based, informed leasing decisions.

‘The new Trustee Policy is a step forward for allowing economic development where there’s available land,’ TSIRC Mayor Phillemon Mosby remarked.

‘This is in line with Council’s broader plans for enterprise development and local prosperity we’ve outlined in our Advocacy Action Plan.’

TSIRC, with support from the Queensland Government and the TSRA, consulted extensively with island communities for the new policy. Council also took the opportunity to raise awareness about home ownership options in the region during the consultation.

Residents can learn more about the policy at the TSIRC website at tsirc.qld.gov.au.
