Welcoming Voices

Community-Centered Review of Repairs and Maintenance
TSIRC is proud to be partnering with the First Nations Housing and Homelessness team (Department of Housing and Public Works) on the Welcoming Voices project, which aims to improve how repairs and maintenance services are delivered across our communities.
Over the past few years, the Welcoming Voices team has been actively listening to tenants and gathering valuable feedback across the Cape and Torres Strait. Notably, 68% of responses to the Welcoming Voices maintenance survey came from tenants living in the outer Torres Strait Island region.
To build on this feedback, the Welcoming Voices team, alongside TSIRC’s Community Services and Building Services Units, are exploring practical ideas for improving maintenance services. In March and April, the team visited Iama, Mabuiag, Boigu, and Mer Islands to host two-day workshops with tenants. These sessions helped explore new ways to streamline repairs, including:
- A maintenance app where tenants can lodge requests
- Uploading photos of repairs needed
- Tracking the progress of maintenance jobs
These are just some of the suggestions being explored with communities to shape a more responsive, community-led maintenance system.
Stay tuned for more updates as the project continues to develop solutions that put our tenants and communities first!
