TSIRC adopts 2023-24 Annual Report following successful 12 months

Last week Torres Strait Island Regional Council adopted its Annual Report for the 2023/24 financial year highlighting the organisation’s steadfast, ongoing commitment in continuing to deliver for its 15 outer island communities.

The report revealed a host of achievements and activities aligned with Council’s vision of autonomy, prosperity and sustainability for Council and communities across the region.

“This annual report highlights our progress in implementing the corporate and operational plans and showcases the dedication of everyone involved in delivering positive outcomes for our communities,” TSIRC CEO James William said.

“Our Mayor, Councillors, Executive Directors and Council staff have played a critical role in advancing the region’s development.

“Their contributions have improved the lives of our communities and I sincerely thank them for their vision and commitment.”

TSIRC Mayor Phillemon Mosby said Council will continue to advocate the State and Federal Governments for funding for improved healthcare and increased Government investment to make housing, education, employment, transportation, digital connectivity and local industries more accessible, affordable and sustainable across the region.

Key outcomes noted in the report over the past 12 months included:

  • The success of the Badu Safe and Healthy Housing Program which centred on key communication and colloboration to educate local
  • families on the importance of home maintenance and its direct link to health;
  • Attaining a $40M funding boost which will assist in marine infrastructure upgrades by replacing three aging jetties with new, modern, fit for purpose facilities;
  • The ongoing dissemination of close to $400,000 of community grants monies to assist with social, cultural, sporting and recreational activities within communities.
  • Key advancements in infrastructure which includes the completion of coastal inundation mitigation projects, works under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) Program and upgrades to the Warraber Island sewer pump station and Badu and Mabuiag water network.
  • Crucial improvements in technology with Council successfully rolling out community Wi-Fi on Kirirri, Masig, Erub and Kubin. Council also worked with Telstra to address 4G blackspots, which improved connectivity across the region.
  • The report also includes a Community Financial Report which reflects Council’s financial performance during the 2023/24 and highlights its commitment to enhancing financial sustainability.
